Asakusa was once the center of Tokyo’s Shitamachi culture, or “under town,” where commoners once lived and thrived. It still retains the hustle and bustle of past decades. Asakusa’s main attraction is Sensoji, a very popular Buddhist temple established in the 7th century. The temple is approached via Nakamise, a shopping street that has provided visitors with snacks and souvenirs for centuries. The temple complex includes the main hall, a five-story pagoda, brilliantly colored gates, and the famous Kaminarimon, or “Thunder Gate,” a stunning vermilion-lacquered gate that stands at the entrance. After enjoying Asakusa, let’s take a cruise to Odaiba via the Sumida River. Odaiba is a man-made island on Tokyo Bay and a popular destination for shopping, dining, and entertainment.
