UNDERGROUND DISCHARGE CHANNEL & USHIKU GREAT BUDDHA

ITINERARY:
Depart 7 a.m. Buddha 10–11:30 a.m. Mall 11:45–1:30 p.m. (Lunch on your own) Discharge Channel 3–4 p.m. Return 5:30 p.m. Tour cost includes bus transportation and admission to the underground discharge facility and Buddha. Participants must be at least six years old and able to walk down and up 120 steps. Lunch is on-your-own at Ami Outlet Mall. Ushiku Daibutsu was the tallest Buddhist statue until 2008 when it was surpassed by the Spring Temple Buddha in China. The Ushiku Buddha stands at 394 ft, equivalent to a 38-story building. Its height, including the 33 ft high base and 33 ft high lotus platform, totals an impressive 4,000 tons, constructed in 1993 to commemorate the birth of Shinran (1173-1263), the founder of the Jodo Shinshu sect of Buddhism. The Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel is an underground infrastructure in Saitama, serving as the world’s largest underground flood water diversion facility. This complex system consists of five massive silos connected by almost four miles of tunnels.
