The tour includes bus transportation and admission to the Toshogu
Shrine and Oya Rock Quarry Museum.
Nestled in the forests of Tochigi Prefecture, this magnificent
landmark memorializes Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the
Tokugawa Shogunate who ruled Japan for over 250 years.
It’s unlike any other shrine in Japan.
Lavishly decorated with gold leaf and elaborate wood carvings,
the Nikko Toshogu Shrine boasts over a dozen buildings. While
exploring the grounds, you’ll notice a few of the quirkier carvings—a
sleeping cat, clawed elephants, and the famous three monkeys
posed in such a way to express the proverbial principle: see no
evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.
After, the tour will continue to the Oya Quarry. During the Edo
Period, man-made caverns were used to harvest the much soughtafter Oya, a soft, yet durable volcanic stone. Today, you can learn
more at the museum and explore the vast network of underground
hallways roughly 12 miles long.
