Odaiba is one of the most popular shopping and entertainment districts in Tokyo. It originated as a set of small man-made islands built toward the end of the Edo Period (1603–1868) to protect Tokyo against possible sea attacks, specifically in response to the gunboat diplomacy of Commodore Perry. A century later, these small islands were joined to form a larger island and developed into one of Tokyo’s most popular tourist attractions, featuring impressive shopping complexes, theme parks, and museums. DECKS Tokyo Beach, located next to Odaiba Beach, features many entertainment centers, including Tokyo Joypolis with the latest virtual reality games, LEGOLAND Discovery Center, Madame Tussauds Wax Museum, and more. AQUA CITY ODAIBA, situated next to DECKS Tokyo Beach, is an entertainment mall offering numerous restaurants, shops, and amusement facilities. DiverCity Tokyo Plaza is a shopping mall with a wide selection of Japan-themed souvenirs and authentic Japanese restaurants. It is easily recognized by the world’s only full-sized Gundam statue (an anime character) guarding the front entrance.
