Hakone National Park, part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, is located less than 100 kilometers from Tokyo. Renowned for its volcanic landscapes and hot springs, Hakone National Park is one of the most popular destinations among both Japanese and international tourists. Enjoy a sweeping view of the National Park from the aerial cable car and visit the valley of Owakudani (Hell Valley), where you’ll witness smoking volcanic activity and sample volcanic-cooked black eggs. Relish the natural scenery and take a delightful boat ride across Lake Ashi. The Hakone Checkpoint was historically an essential station controlling traffic along the Tokaido highway, which connected Tokyo with Kyoto during the feudal Edo Period. This checkpoint regulated the transport of weapons into Edo and monitored people entering and leaving the area. It operated for more than 260 years until the Meiji Restoration of 1868. Finally, visit Hakone Shrine, located at the foot of Mt. Hakone along the shores of Lake Ashi. Founded in 757, this shrine is famous for its large red torii gate that stands majestically in the lake.
